That looks like a wonderful recipe! I've been on the lookout for oat bread. But I'm with the other two ladies - can it be made without a bread machine??
The bread sounds delicious. I am also going to add my name to the people that do not have a bread machine. But now I want one! Or also to learn how to knead and make the bread by hand, now that would be fun.
You make me jealous now, all my tomatoe sandwhiches have been on wonder bread. ;_;
I have a bread machine, but it sucks. everytime I bake something, the bread comes out hard as a rock. I thought it was something I did wrong, but each time I tried using it all the bread came out the same way...sad...:-( btw, I couldn't resist gving you another blog award...heh heh! next time, I really have to branch out to others, but sigh, you're just that irresistible, muhaha!
I love Balboa Park -- one of my favorite things about San Diego. I can see why you wanted to recreate the sandwich you had there. It sounds absolutely delectable!
I suppose I've been a bit embarrassed to admit I have a bread machine - reading the blogs of amazing bakers has given me an inferiority complex! But this recipe and your end result are proof that delicious is delicious, even if we need a little mechanical assistance! 8-)
Mmm, Pearl, that oatbread looks fantastic. Why is it that oats are so darn good?! There's just something about them that's uber-comforting, and putting them in the bread is even better. Great job!

About Me
Pearl
My childhood home had two kitchens: one where my grandmother would stand over risen dough, folding a spoonful of spiced meats and vegetables into the soft flour to make her savory steamed buns; the other where I would sit on the sunlit ceramic tile countertop, giggling with my mother while using both hands to hold the hand mixer steady. With streaks of flour across my face, I marveled over the rising cake in the oven, anticipating its vanilla taste and fluffy, light layers. I feel safe in the kitchen, for it is my sanctum and oasis.
