There should be a new genre

of movies that aren't necessarily scary (in The Ring sense), but are extremely disturbing.

But most movies straddle the line between scary and disturbing anyways, so it's easier to just group them into one.

However, there is one movie I recently saw that definitely fit the bill for disturbing - to the point that I was hiding underneath a blanket and squirming like a caterpillar stuck in a straw.

This movie is called Dumplings.

Has anyone seen it?

It's a foreign film (Hong Kong) that was originally part of a 3-movie compilation of horror movies. It ended up developing into a full-length movie, although the original retains much of the plot. I saw both the original short film of the 3-movie compilation and the full-length movie; however, I think the ending of the original was more haunting but you'll have to watch the movie to see why.

You can watch the original on "Watch It Now" on Netflix; if anyone really wants to see it, I can give you my Netflix account and password and you can watch it there!

Note: I'm about to reveal some information about this film. If you are queasy, eating something, or have a sensitive stomach, please reconsider if you want to read the following:

The movie is about this woman, Mrs. Li, who is married to a wealthy man but is losing his interest. He's cheating on her, and in a desperate attempt to recapture his attention, she visits a woman who is renowned for her "youth dumplings." It becomes evident that she stuffs the dumplings with a mixture of vegetables and aborted baby fetuses, which she claims "helps keep her young."

I know, I know - it's disgusting. But I what disturbs me even more is the fact that this movie is not completely fiction. It actually happens. It's been featured in newspapers, along with pictures that document each process (my mother told me about it - I have not seen the article). I think it's absolutely heartbreaking.

I've heard of situations like this before where people, in an effort to distinguish themselves from the "masses," would purchase aborted fetuses on the black market and cook them in dishes. I don't want to talk about their justification for this, as I don't think I can remain impartial in discussions like this.

Anyways, here's the link to the movie if you'd like to find out more about it, courtesy of Wikipedia: Dumplings (film).

In other news:

I received an ice cream attachment for my KitchenAid Artisan mixer! It was a promotional event, and I've been chilling the ice cream maker in the freezer for a couple of days now. Does anyone know any food ice cream recipes? Or any fantastic ideas for ice cream? I'm trying to decide if I should make a batch of Vanilla ice cream or something crazier... like Coffee Ice Cream with dried cherries and toffee swirls. Mm!

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THAT FABIO WAS ELIMINATED? :(

OH MY GOD Yes I have seen this movie, and it creeped the shizznit out of me!!!! I didn't dare to read your description of it because I can still remember how awful the movie made me feel. Yikes!!

I mostly use my ice cream maker for sorbet - blend your favorite fruit with some simple syrup and freeze!

Peanut butter ice cream! You should make peanut butter ice cream!

And thanks for the sweet compliment. But really, I'm a lot more goofy than what I appear. Really, I'm just a neurotic spazz who is obsessed with working out (and then eating), dancing, writing and chasing her dogs. Ben's lucky if I blowdry my hair!

That movie sounds really bizarre! I guess I'd watch it?

I think you should make lavender ice cream! And how do you like your KitchenAid mixer? I'm thinking about getting one, but I can't decide I should shell out the dough!

Have a great afternoon, Pearl!

Ew. Ew ew ew. Ew. I was going to say I think there was an old goosebumps episode where babyfood had a similar use. I like that version better. And than I thought oh.. babyfood. I wonder where the idea came from. Ew.

On a far less gross note.. awesome about the icecream maker. I actually have an 'ice cream & frozen dessert' recipe book, and no attachment. I'll vicariously flip through it later and report if I see anything good.

I have no idea how to make ice cream, but post it if you do :)

Asian horror movies are RIDIC.

It's not a big surprise for me. I think I can understand why the woman is using aborted baby fetuses to "helps keep her young". Believe it or not, even in our daily aging products (not traditional but modern/branded cosmetic such as lotion/cream), one of the most important ingredient is placenta.

Congrats for the icecream attachment :)

I've never heard of the movie, but it sounds pretty disturbing!

I have the KitchenAid ice cream attachment, but hardly ever use it. I've made cookie dough regular ice cream, as well as some raw vegan ice cream. There are lots of good recipes online if you have an idea of the flavors you like.

Never heard of that movie! I love a good scary movie on occasion! Hey- did you get my email btw?

I haven't heard of that movie before. I don't think I'd be able to watch anything that makes me squirm in my seat. I'm a real BIG TIME wimp when it comes to scary movies or thrillers. The anxiety just gets to me.

Congrats on the new ice cream maker attachment. I love it! Believe me the ice cream you make at home is far more rich and creamy and just all around better than the ones you get at the store (they're all filled with air and artificial stuff anyways). I have lots of recipes. email me if you'd like some. If you've never made ice cream before, I think it'd be wise to stick to something simple as vanilla and then work your way up.

GAAAH!!! I ignored your warning and read on, even though I was eating dinner! omh, that is horrendous! I can't believe it's based partly on facts, too!
but then thank god you mentioned ice-cream! you lucky girl, I hope you have tons of fun with your ice cream maker! hmmm...I'd like green tea with adzuki beans myself...or pumpkin with pecan brittles?

I've only heard of this movie...

Try rice ice cream at the clumbsy cookie!

I love horror films and I don't mind gore. I will have to check this out because it sounds a little ghoulish. Hubby won't watch so I have to wait until he is out of town to rent all my horror/weirdo films!

MAN... I was curious about "Dumplings" and so went to look at some of the clips on Youtube. The last scene where she was giving herself self-abortion and looking all hungry is sooo disturbing.

Kinda like telling us we shouldn't even start thinking about cannibalism because we won't stop at that.

Sarah (lovINmytummy) said...

I thought you were going to post a dumplings recipe. Ew.

I have a Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream cookbook that my girls get out and just drool all over the pages. I've never made any of the recipes, but I definitely should.

I was very sad when Fabio got eliminated. He was my favorite. :(

Congrats on the attachment. I got mine last summer and we love it.

I'll have to check that movie out. It sounds pretty disturbing. I am a fan of foreign horror.

Try the Ben & Jerry's book. It is pretty good. Also, google candied bacon ice cream.

I made coconut rum with pistachios last summer that was really good.

Pearl, Willias-Sonoma as an incredible recipe for Olive Oil Gelato. I know, I know, it sounds so strange, but it is absolutely delicious! It gives it a rich, kind of nutty flavor that is great. You can find it at Williams-Sonoma.com if you do a recipe search for Olive Oil Gelato. You won't be sorry. Really
