2 Cupids & a Giveaway

Okay, what a lame title.  Was I unconsciously channeling "Four Weddings & A Funeral?"  I'll never know.  Lord.  I just realized I don't even know what that movie is about.

Speaking of movies:  I recently saw Ghost.  Yup.  The movie with pre-Ashton Demi Moore and a rugged Patrick Swayze.  Now I understand why some ladies I know all swoon over Patrick Swayze.  I guess he's like the Jonas Brothers (all three wrapped into one) of today's generation.  Or more like the favorite Backstreet Boy of my generation (Nick - did you know that I was going to marry you?  Yeah.  Until you came out with your own reality show.  I think we might be better off as friends).

Anyways.  So, this year, I participated in the blogger Secret Valentine.  I can't tell you who it is, but that person will find out in 2-3 days.  I decided to take on a second valentine, too (don't tell my mama - she'll be disappointed in me), but she knows who she is.  You're getting brittle, my darling.

In regards to the giveaway (did I just say "in regards?"  Really?  And what is up with the overly abundant parenthetical deliberations today?), it's about peanut butter.  Remember my post about PB2?  The crazy delicious powdered peanut butter?  Yes, well, Gina over at Bell Plantation has oh-so-generously sent me 4 jars of PB2 to use in a giveaway!  Now, instead of my brilliantly fantastic initial idea of sending one person 4 jars of PB2 (I have an excuse:  I had a Nyquil in my system.  And there I go again with those parentheses), I've decided to choose 4 people to each receive one jar of the original PB2!

Would ya like to know how you may get a jar?

Go ahead and comment on this entry.  Tell me this: What was your first ever memory of Peanut Butter?  What brand was it?  How did it taste like?  What did it look like to you?  Did you eat it straight out of the jar, or was it slathered on fresh, toasted bread?

Since I'm asking all those incredibly deep, thought-provoking questions that are worthy enough to be asked in Philosophy 121, I'll answer them first.

I was sitting up, with my back board-straight, in the seat usually reserved for my grandpa, swinging my legs back and forth beneath the chair.  My younger brother was sitting to the left of me.  My mama was in the kitchen, telling me that she was going to make breakfast.  I wasn't a breakfast type of gal (can anyone really look back onto their childhood and honestly say that they liked eating breakfast?  I thought it was such a waste of biking time), but I had to sit there and wait.  My mama brought over two plates, and set each in front of my brother and me.  She then brought over two glasses of warm milk (we weren't allowed to drink anything cold when we were little cause it contributed to colds.  Shush.) and set that to the right of the plate.  I looked at my plate, smelled my food (yes, I smelled my food when I was little.  I actually put my nose against the dish and sniffed cautiously because my family liked to trick me into eating foods like eggs and tofu and cauliflower), and looked incredulously at my mother.

"What's this?" I pointed to the piece of bread, folded in half.  "It's got brown stuff inside it."

My mother returned back to the kitchen, and while wiping down the counter (my mama's a proud clean freak), replied, "It's hua-seng jiang."

I stared at my plate.  My mama had just told me, in Chinese, that it was "peanut butter."  Of course, I had no clue what peanut butter was, so that didn't really help.

"What's in it?"

Clearing away the dirty dishes, she said, "Peanuts."

I looked over at my brother.  He was already chowing away at his piece of dried bread with the weird brown mix.  He seemed to be enjoying it.

Slightly comforted, I lifted up the piece of bread to take a bite.  Then set it back down.

My brother liked everything.

My mother was watching me.  She was so excited that, maybe today, she'd get me to eat my food without the usual 20-minute interrogation.  She'd become ecstatic when I lifted up my peanut butter sandwich to take a bite, and then felt the knocking blow of a close victory being snatched away.  So close.

It began.

"Does it have eggs in it?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"You didn't put an egg in here?"

"No."

"Does it have tofu in it?"

"No.  You'd know if you would tas-"

"Does it have cauliflower in it?"

"No, just tast-"

"Why is it so brown?"

"It's the color of peanuts."

"The ones that you eat aren't brown.  They're beige."

"This one is brown."

"Are there brown peanuts in the world?"

"I don't know."

"Did you mix this with something weird?  Why is it brown?  Did you mix the peanuts with the tea eggs?  Those are brown.  Did you mix the peanuts with the tea-eggs to try and get me to eat the eggs? You know I don't like those eggs. Eggs are gross. They smell.  I don't want it.  I want my pop tart."

"No, there are no eggs.  Why would I put in eggs?"

"I don't know.  You do it all the time."

"Eat it."

"So why do you?"

"Why do I what?"

"Why do you try and trick me to eat eggs?"

"Pearl, there are no eggs and no tofu in this sandwich."

I paused.

"Mama, where did you put the peanuts?"

"Why, do you want some?"

"Yes please."

My mother went and grabbed the peanuts.  I popped open a shell.  I crushed the peanut with a spoon, and made a crumbly mess on the table.

"Pearl, what are you doing?  You just made a mess on the tab-"

Convinced that there was something sneaky in it, I fumed, "If this brown stuff is made from peanuts, then why is it sticky? I can't get the peanuts to stick together!!!"

My mother stared at me, in all of my huffing, mad, self-righteous four-year-old pigtailed glory.  I looked back at her.  She took a deep breath.

"Just take a bite.  If you don't like it, I'll get you your pop tart."

I looked at my sandwich.  Weird.  Brown stuff oozing out and sticking to my fingers.  Ugh.  How incredibly messy (can you see the resemblance?).

I picked it up.  I took a bite.

I swallowed.

And then I took another bite.

"Thish ith fun!"  I proclaimed, "It sticksh to mah mouf."

Aww...cute story! My love of peanut butter goes way back. I can't remember my first ever memory, but I remember having PB&J sandwiches for lunch ALL the time as a child. I did not like the cheese and meat sandwiches other kids had. It was PB or nothing for me. And I was very particular about how they were best enjoyed. Before taking the sandwich out of the little plastic baggy, I'd smash it. I'd smash it til it was as thin as could be and the jelly was oozing out of the bread pores. So delicious. :-)

I don't remember my first peanut butter, it was probably in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich though. My mom used to make them with plum jam!

Haha, long story!

I don't remember exactly my first memory of peanut butter, but I do remember having a spoonful plain at my Grandma's house every time I visited her - she had the Jif/Skippy smooth kind, and I loved it because my mom always had the "weird" and healthy natural kind (which I now prefer).

That's a cute story. You were such an inquisitive girl!

My first recollection of peanut butter was having a sandwich at my dad's house, after he and my mom had split up. He eats PB every day (from a big jar of JIF), so logically, it was a good bachelor-father food for 6-year-old me. In retrospect, I'm a little shocked that he let me eat a peanut butter, jelly, and BUTTER sandwich (Yes. Butter.), but I have to admit that it was really tasty. I guess I'm destined to have PB-lovers in my life. The boyfriend eats two PBJ sandwiches every day, and we have a 5-lb jar in the pantry as we speak.

That's a cute story! I don't remember my first taste of peanut butter... but we did eat a lot of peanut butter growing up. It was usually with honey or my favorite's of Pineapple Apricot jelly or Welches concord grape jelly. We always ate Laura Scudder's peanut butter. It was always the best. Sometimes we would get fresh made peanut butter from the health food store! And if it was too sticky, my Mom would use butter on the bread! What memories!

pearl your stories always put a big smile on my face :D what would i do without you?

my first memory of peanut butter is back when i was about 3 yr old. i remember my mum making a breakfast one morning - 2 frozen toaster waffles with peanut butter [jiff!] and grape jelly. i feel in love!!! and i ate this everyday while watching sesame street up until i started first grade. then i moved on to flavored oatmeal - waffles must have been deemed as ''kiddy food'' oh well. i still love [and eat] pb wafflewiches today!

i <3 peanut butter too!

Did you see Nick Carter on the cover of People? Well, not the cover, but the side of the cover? Talking about addiction and weight loss...he's looking pretty good!

hahahha.... fun story Pearl! You always make me laugh :D

my first memory about PB was like 15 years ago? of course in China, can't remember the bran, but it was novelty for me at that time. I remember having it in a toast and was happy to have my first western breakfast (toast + PB)! :D

Awww Pearl!! Hahaha! Your poor mom! My first memory of PB was when I was 8 years old and had just finished reading a book about a girl who went to live on a boat with pirates. None of the pirates knew how to cook (guess they didn't have a mess mate then), and so the girl ended up eating toast with peanut butter every morning. And I went, "Whaaaa, peanut butter?" and sprinted to the convenience store down the road and immediately got a jar of Skippy's chunky peanut butter. I then waited breathlessly for the next morning to come (God knows why I didn't just eat it then...) and then proceeded to toast myself a slice of plain white bread... waited breathlessly for THAT to pop out of the toaster, and then proceeded to slather a generous amount of peanut butter on it. I still remember how runny the heat from the toast made the peanut butter, and of course I had to fold the toast into a triangle. The first bite and I was HOOKED. The crunchiness of the toast, the stickiness of the peanut butter, the additional, hidden crunch of the peanut chunks... oh lordy!

Pearl, I NEED that jar of PB2!!! Ahhh!! I went to the site and they don't deliver to the UK. *sniff* My life is incomplete without it!!

My grandma used to make toast out of Wonder bread and then smear chunky Skippy peanut butter as soon as it came out of the toaster so it immediately began to melt. Pure heaven!

Pure grossness was my brother who would make grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - it was always a mess to watch him eat that!!

I LOVED PB, honey, and banana sandwiches! I used to have them all of the time when I was little. I need to eat them more often. It is a comforting food!! Great giveaway! Thanks!

That is the funniest story! I love it! I bet you were such an imp as a child!

I've been eating PB since birth, I believe. If I don't have at least a spoonful every day flames billow from my eyes and smoke comes out of my ears. I do remember singing the peanut butter jelly song in pre-school and feeling bad when we had to clap our hands to "squish" the grapes because I worried we were hurting the grape's feelings.

I moved! Come visit me at www.aduckinherpond.com.

You crack me up Pearl.

I love peanut butter but honestly can't remember my first taste of it. I just know that I loved peanut butter, honey and potato chip sandwiches when I was a kid. Sweet, salty and crunchy. Delicious!

How truly adorable! You must have been a cute pain in the butt.

Sadly, I cannot answer your question at all, I have such a bad memory.

I remember my granny used to give me a teasoon of peanut butter as a treat when I went to visit her. She always had JIF. I loved going to see her because she would sit me in the kitchen to watch her cook. I would get my peanut butter and it was like a lollipop. I just remembered it tasted sweet and creamy. Whe I was really really good, she would slice a banana and put a dollop on each slice.

It was a peanut butter with strawberry jam. I remember the jam swirls in the jar, but cant remember what brand, it was a long time ago! But I do remember eating it right out of the jar. Thanks for a great giveaway!

You are the loveliest! *hugs*

My first memory of peanut butter dates to when I was 13! Quite old! my Ima (mother) wouldn't allow it in the house when I was growing up, saying it was the most fatty unhealthy stuff on earth. I was deprived! Of course, today (eons later!) we know that it has lots of nutritional qualities.

I tasted it at my friend Natalie's house. They were a cool veggie family and had a natural nutty variety with yummy crusty bread! I had it every time I came over! I love it now and through blogging I have discovered that you can make all manner of peanut butter biscuits and things, which is awesome. In the UK we are much less peanut butter focused, and in France no-one eats it. It can be found in the 'world food' aisle and costs about $7 a jar!

Incidentally, to continue my peanut butter ramble/stream of consciouness, tonight I'm going to try my hand at satay sauce...

lol! no wonder you had stalker problems...you're just too adorable!
I think my first experience with PB was in the form of a peanut pancake, called mee jiang kueh in singapore...They usually grind their own peanuts with brown sugar, so it's brandless! but to tell you the truth...I didn't like pb that much before, because I thought it was dry! but now I love it, esp in oatmeal!

My first PB memory....was definitely by itself in between two slices of bread. And it was definitely smooth peanut butter. No jelly. Just straight up! And it was skippy! In Hong Kong, we don't get that much choice.

HAHAH, I love your PB story. And I'd love some PB2!

My first memory of peanut butter isn't of eating it. I had this horrible problem of getting gum in my LOOONG brown hair every time I chewed it (the gum, not my hair). I just had this horrible habit of playing with my food (still do), not that gum is food. Anyhow, I was about five years old and chewing a big wad of gum at my best friend's house when, yup, big nasty pink Bubbilicious wad right in my hair. Her mom got out a gigantic jar of peanut butter and I swear spread half of it on my head. I just remember having my head in their bathroom sink, the sound of rushing hot water, and the smell of warm peanut butter. Mmmm...

It works though, so file that one away for future reference!

I love PB, so I will play along. My Mom went through this very long period of being a health-food freak and only feeding us food that was good for us. Can you believe it? Child Abuse! So we had this horrid - made-at-the-healthfood-store-only-from-peanuts peanut butter. I wanted the unhealthy full of transfats stuff, so I had to go buy it in back alleys, Sad huh? :)

kayla said...

my earliest peanut butter memory would have to be eating it with bananas with my dad. we would grab a banana and peel it open then grab a butter knife and put it on the banana straight from the jar...peanut buttering one bite at a time. knife in, put on, bite, repeat.

I don't remember my exact age but I do know that I was little. We would always have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Saturdays for lunch, usually with fritos and pace salsa. So good! One of the favorite things my mom would make would be an open faced heart PBJ - meaning, a piece of bread spread with peanut butter and a heart made of jelly. Mmm! I'm pretty sure we used Peter Pan.

in the good old days of

eating heaping spoonfuls

so delicately shoved into

i am so intrigued by this
pb2 ordeal. i hope i win!

My first memory of peanut butter is when I was about 5 or 6. I was at a friends house, and we ate PBJ on white bread. I was amazed...the closest thing I had had was almond butter on rice cakes. (My family is pretty healthy.) I loved it immediately. Even now, I don't use JIF or Skippy, I buy pure roasted PB, no sugar added.

I am really interested in trying PB2...thanks for hosting this contest!

I don't recall my first memory of eating peanut butter but I do recall all the crazy things I'd eat it with. I remember a time when I'd toast bread and put on a thick slather of butter followed by a thick slather of peanut butter. So gross to think of it now but it was the bomb then. I also used to sprinkle sugar on top of the peanut butter--that was so yummy too. I still love peanut butter today, I eat it almost every morning for breakfast with toast.

Hahah! i love your story about the pb!

my first memory of pb is either eating it at home, in which it had to be peter pan pb and lots of it, or going to my best friends house and having pb and chocolate sammies on white bread...oh those were the days! so good! can't wait to see who wins!!!
